My Top 10 Albums of 2017

file.jpeg

2017 has been... a ride. Music served as an excellent escape form the craziness happening around us this year. 2017 served as a year of exploration for me when it comes to music. My "favorite genre" changed, my passion for music grew, and I couldn't be happier about it!

Let's get into it, shall we?!

5 Day Mischon - Tom Misch
Yes, I am going to start this list off with an EP. Get over it!!! This is an exquisite piece of work! Tom Misch is an angel. A super sick, beat making, angel. Keep an eye on this guy, new music coming April 2018!!!

DAMN. - Kendrick Lamar
Oh Kendrick, you have my heart. This album is everything I could've asked for and more.  For the first time since 2009, I bought a CD for my car - and it was this one. That alone should tell you how f***ing awesome this album is!!

Ctrl - SZA
oooooomahgawd.  This album is heavenly. This artist is heavenly. That's all i really need to say. Just listen to it!!

Love You Really - Elli Ingram
This album and I have a newfound love - meaning I found it two days ago and haven't been able to turn it off! Elli has a really dope sound and I think y'all should check her out!

dont smile at me - Billie Eilish
This ethereal indie album is pretty dope. Billie has plays with a lot of different sounds while keeping true to her Indie genre. I like!!!

blkswn - Smino
Smino does a wonderful job of merging hip-hop and soul/funk. This album gives you a very special feeling every time you listen to it. I'm confident that Smino will continue to blow us away with his unique sound!

After Laughter - Paramore
Ugh. Paramore. Hayley Williams can do no wrong in my eyes. Paramore does a great job altering their sound ever so slightly to connect with newer audiences without losing their punk. This album is nothing but fun!

SweetSexySavage - Kehlani
KEHLANI. omahgawd. She's angelic. This album just makes me dance!!!

Yes Lawd! - NxWorries
Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge have created the jazziest, funkiest, danciest album of the year. These two artists are unbelievably talented and their music never fails to make me happy.

War & Leisure - Miguel
Miguel has the smoothest voice of 2017 - hands down! I don't know if it makes sense to describe a voice as handsome but that's what it is! This album is classic Miguel & there is absolutely nothing wrong with that!

2017 proved to be a great year for music! Let's hope for even better albums in 2018!!

My Top 10 Albums of 2016

images.jpg

In my opinion, the only good thing to come out of 2016 was some bomb ass music. So many creative minds blessed us with their talent in beautiful albums this year.

Here we go friends - after lots of thought and personal battles - my top 10 favorite albums of 2016!! Please leave your top 10 in the comments below!

The Human Condition - Jon Bellion
The Human Condition is 1000000% my #1 album of the year. Jon's mind is incredibly complex. His team lives by the phrase "Beautiful Mind" after-all. Each song is meticulously put together by Jon himself, and after going to his concert this summer it was clear to me that he is as passionate about making his music as I am about listening to it!! Love him - y'all definitely need to check him out if you haven't already.

Joanne - Lady Gaga
If you haven't already seen it, I geeked out about this album already (check it!). This album is more beautiful every time I listen to it. This might be a top 10 album of all time for me tbh.

Blonde - Frank Ocean
I geeked about this album the day it came out as well (check it -part 2). Frank Ocean is an exquisite human being with the voice of an angel. That is all.

Coming Home - Leon Bridges
If you want to take a trip back to the 1960's listen to this album ASAP. Leon's voice is so smooth it'll make you melt. This soul album has had a place on my top 10 list since it first hit my eardrums.

Coloring Book - Chance The Rapper
Chance is the most controversial rapper on the scene at the moment. He refuses to sign with a record label to prove he has what it takes to climb to the top on his own - and he is definitely doing it. This album has a little bit of everything in it. A bit of rap, bit of R&B, bit of hip-hop - you name it, it's here. Definitely worth a listen!

Professional Rapper - Lil Dicky
Lil Dicky is a comedy rapper but the dude has some serious talent. His flow is incredible and his lyrics actually tell a story - unlike the "popular" rappers you hear on the radio today. This is his debut album and if the rest are anything like it, this guy will be big!

You're a Man Now Boy - Raleigh Ritchie
Game of Thrones fans will recognize Raleigh as Grey Worm, one of Khaleesi's trusty sidekicks. In this album he shows some serious R&B talent. His voice is pretty dope and his lyrics are deep. Check him out for sure!

Dangerous Woman - Ariana Grande
Ariana has some serious pipes, y'all. This girl definitely knows how to hit a note. Her newest album really rocked my socks this summer, too. Although it is more "mainstream", I really like Ariana's energy and style. She deserved a spot on this list.

The Divine Feminine - Mac Miller
I'll admit, I was a bit timid hitting play when this album first hit Spotify, but I am truly pleased! I haven't liked anything Mac has put out since Blue Slide Park in 2011. My favorite song off the album is definitely Dang! (feat. Anderson Paak). Great work Mac!

2016 was a rollercoaster, but we had some great music to listen to during our ride! Let's hope for even better records in 2017!!

Joanne - Lady Gaga

First of all, Gaga is a queen and there is nothing you could say to change my mind. ESPECIALLY after listening to Joanne!!!!
Second, this new album is everything we didn't know we wanted from Gaga.
I think we can all agree that ARTPOP was more of an ARTFLOP, but Gaga really showed her talent in her collaboration album, Cheek to Cheek, with Tony Bennett. Gaga continues to show off her vocal talent throughout Joanne.

Joanne is the start of something beautiful for Gaga. She has stated that she wanted the focus to be on the lyrics of this album. She wanted the songs to sound more like a story than a melody. When writing the songs, Gaga pictured a girl in the middle of nowhere who would understand the lyrics and make a human connection to them. Gaga decided that in order to make this a reality she would have to mix up some genres including country, funk, pop, folk, electronic music, dance, & rock. What more could we ask for?! Then there's the emotional connection -- & she gave it to us on a silver platter. Gaga wanted us to be able to feel the heartbreak, desire, nostalgia, and frustration she was feeling while writing. In previous interviews, Gaga said she wanted Joanne to be a surprise for her audience. She described the production process as "a wonderful, soul-searching experience." Honestly, listening to the album is an equally wonderful and soul-searching experience. Thanks Gaga!!
Family is definitely an underlying theme throughout the album. The album is named after her father's late sister, Joanne Stefani Germanotta, who died at 19 years old in 1974 due to complications related to Lupus. Gaga has stated that although they never met, Joanne has always been the biggest figure in her life. She credits beating addiction as well as her success as a musician all to her Aunt Joanne. I think we all owe Aunt Joanne a big huge thank you for inspiring the genius that is Lady Gaga.
With the combination of emotional lyrics and creative genre mixes, Joanne has quickly become my favorite album of 2016. What are your favorite songs off the album so far? What do/don't you like about Gaga's new feel? Let's chat in the comments below!

FRANK OCEAN'S LONG AWAITED RETURN

Holy shit you guys. I know I've been pretty MIA this summer but please forgive me because OMG it's here. Frank Ocean has FINALLY released his long awaited album - but with a new name - Blond(e). {None of us are sure if the 'e' is supposed to be there or not...}
I live-tweeted my thoughts on each song HERE. 10/10!!!!

In Common - Alicia Keys

Happy Thursday, friends! Today I'm coming at you with some NEW MUSIC from our long time pal, Alicia Keys. Rumor has it that she is going to be blessing us with a new album this fall, and if it is anything like this new song she dropped yesterday - I'm going to love it! This new song shows off her soft tones with a very dancey background. I'm definitely digging it and wanted to make sure you all heard it ASAP. Let me know how you feel about it in the comments below!

My Funny Valentine - Frank Sinatra {Year In Review}

OneYear.jpg

Well friends, it's official. We have been listening, learning, and loving together for an entire year. Happy Anniversary to us!

You can listen to today's song here: My Funny Valentine

A lot has changed for me since I first started this blog. First, I graduated high school and started a new journey at Purdue University. While being at Purdue, I have not only gained knowledge, but readers, and for that I am extremely thankful. I have had over 1,300 individual readers in exactly one year. That is quite an accomplishment in my eyes! Thank you all so much for your interest! Second, my family moved across the country to Texas, which has been quite an adjustment. Then, I had a very difficult dorm experience with my roommate when I got to Purdue, which may have inspired a couple angry/emotional playlists.

The blog has also been through a few changes! First, I had added a "spotlight" section, which admittedly went very poorly. Wah Wah! In June the website got a much needed facelift! I brightened up the look and made the layout much more enjoyable to browse. More recently, I added a Song Of The Day segment, which I believe has been going very well (considering that you're on the page right now) but correct me if I'm wrong and you hate it. I am very accepting of any and all feedback!

I am so very excited to start year two with all of you! I am looking forward to many more beautiful & bumpin' playlists, hopefully with some suggested by you! Let me know what you'd like to see in the upcoming year in the comments below!

Today's song is My Funny Valentine by Frank Sinatra. Sinatra put out this beautiful tune in 1954. He is arguably one of the most important artists of the 20th Century. Sinatra's career lasted almost 60 years and he kept his popularity the entire time. He was incredible when it came to changing his music to fit "the times" and for that I applaud him. Not many artists are willing to change their sound in fear of losing their audience, but Frank was willing to take chances.
I hope you have a day filled with love and music. Happy Valentine's Day, friends.
